Visiting Montpellier for the first time?
Welcome to this millennial city, bathed in sunshine 300 days a year and increasingly popular with French and foreigners.
It’s not easy to choose a place to stay from a distance, so discover the city center neighborhoods below. It’s not very large, so most things are within walking distance – or by tram, with its 4 lines effectively shortening distances.

Here are some things to consider when choosing your neighborhood in Montpellier.
- L’Écusson is the historic center. It is a pedestrian zone, perfect for walking but not ideal if you have a car or plan to rent one. Apartments are generally old. Depending on the floor, they can be a bit dark because most medieval streets are narrow. Some parts of L’Écusson are very quiet, while others are very lively thanks to bars and restaurants. So it’s perfect for party animals but much less suitable if you are looking for peace. Be sure to check Google Maps for the apartment’s surroundings!
- The neighborhoods around L’Écusson are quite similar: they are accessible by car (more or less easily depending on the neighborhood) and are composed of both old and modern buildings. If you are looking for a modern apartment, especially with air conditioning and an elevator, you will find good options there.
- If you enjoy green spaces, the proximity of the Lez River will appeal to you: it is the ideal place to walk, run, and sunbathe. A bike path runs along the river all the way to the sea! Swimmers, it is also in this neighborhood that you will find the Olympic swimming pool. This is the Antigone neighborhood, built in the 1980s.
In conclusion, the neighborhood with the most advantages is that of the Gare Saint Roch (pronounced Rok), where you can do everything on foot and access the 4 tram lines as well as the trains.
