French from Scratch

Regular verbs

There are three major groups of regular verbs in French. Since French regular -er verbs are the most numerous, they are considered the first conjugation.
These verbs are a great place to start for beginners. They follow a regular pattern that makes them easy to learn.

On this page, you will find a variety of resources to help you learn French regular -er verbs:

1. Regular verbs & present
2. Regular verbs & future
3. Regular verbs & past

1. present

Je marche à la plage (I’m walking on the beach)

To conjugate these verbs:
1. drop the -er from the infinitive to form the stem: marcher –> march-
2. add the endings to the stem:
– je marche
– tu marches
– il / elle / on marche
– nous marchons
– vous marchez
– ils / elles marchent

The endings (-e, -es, -e, and -ent) are all silent. The only endings that are pronounced are the nous (-ons) and the vous (-ez) endings.
